How to get more patients from Google: a Google Business Profile guide for clinics
How clinics and doctors can rank higher on Google Maps and get more patients: set up and optimise your Google Business Profile, earn reviews and answer every call.

The short answer
Many patients choose a nearby clinic from Google Search and Maps. To appear and be chosen, claim and verify your Google Business Profile, pick the most specific primary category, keep your hours, phone and address exact, add services, real photos and a booking link, ask every patient for a review and reply to reviews. Keep the same details on your website and directories, and answer the calls Google sends you.
How Google decides which clinics to show
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the area they named) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and links across the web). You cannot change distance, but you control relevance and much of your prominence.
Claim and verify your profile
Search for your clinic on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one. Verify it using the method Google offers. Use your real clinic name exactly as it appears on your signboard, without extra keywords, which break Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Choose the right categories
Your primary category has a large effect on which searches you appear for. Choose the most specific option that describes the clinic, such as “Dermatologist” or “Dental clinic” rather than a generic “Medical clinic”, and add secondary categories only for services you actually provide.
Complete every field
Incomplete profiles lose patients who are comparing clinics.
- Regular hours, plus special hours for holidays and doctor leave
- A phone number that is answered during clinic hours
- An appointment or booking link
- Services with short descriptions
- Attributes such as wheelchair access
- A plain description of who you treat and what you offer
Add real photos
Add photos of the entrance and signboard (so patients can find you), reception, waiting area, consultation rooms and the team, with consent. Avoid stock images. Do not post photos that show patients or patient information.
Get reviews the right way
Ask every patient after their visit and send a direct link to your review form by WhatsApp or SMS. Make asking a routine step at checkout. Google’s policies prohibit offering incentives for reviews and selectively asking only satisfied patients, so ask everyone and never buy or write reviews.
Reply to every review without revealing patient information
Thank positive reviewers and respond to negative ones calmly, offering to discuss the issue offline. Do not confirm that the reviewer is your patient or mention any diagnosis, treatment or visit detail, even if they did. Health information is personal data, and a public reply is not the place to clarify it.
Keep your details consistent everywhere
Use the same clinic name, address and phone number on your website, Google profile, Practo, Justdial, Facebook and any other listings. Inconsistent details confuse both patients and search engines. Update every listing when timings or numbers change.
Post updates regularly
Use Google Business Profile posts for new services, changed timings, health camps and holiday hours. Regular, accurate updates keep the profile useful to patients who are about to call.
Answer the calls Google sends you
A higher ranking only helps if patients get through. Track calls coming from your profile and make sure missed calls are returned quickly. An AI receptionist or after-hours answering can take booking requests when the desk is busy.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t my clinic show up on Google Maps?
Common causes are an unverified or suspended profile, a generic primary category, incomplete details, few reviews, inconsistent name, address and phone number across the web, or simply being further from the searcher than other clinics. Fix verification and the category first.
How do I get more Google reviews for my clinic?
Ask every patient at the end of the visit, send a direct review link the same day, and make it a routine step for reception. Do not offer rewards and do not ask only satisfied patients.
Can I reply to a review that mentions a patient’s treatment?
Reply, but do not confirm the person is a patient or discuss any treatment. Thank them, acknowledge the concern in general terms and invite them to contact the clinic directly.
Should each doctor have a separate Google profile?
Google’s guidelines allow individual practitioner profiles in some cases. Where a doctor is the only practitioner at a location, Google asks for a single shared profile. Check Google’s current guidelines before creating extra profiles; duplicates can hurt visibility.
How long do Google Business Profile changes take?
Edits are usually reviewed by Google before they appear, which can take from minutes to several days. Ranking improvements from reviews and consistent details build gradually over weeks and months.
